Derek Jeter’s Yankees Uniform Is Setting Records 25 Years After It Was Worn

Derek Jetter is nothing short of being a legend in the world of baseball. Considered by some as one of the most popular players to ever enter the sandlot, it’s not surprising that memorabilia related to his stellar career fetches the highest prices when it comes to auctions. After all, owning a piece of Jeter’s career means owning a part of the sport’s long history.

Record-Setting Sale

The uniform also came with Jeter’s signature as well as a letter of authenticity

Case in point is the recent sale of one the athlete’s old uniforms. After paying a whopping $369,000 for the coveted item, a lucky bidder won over 18 others and is now the proud owner of the uniform Jeter wore during his debut game for the New York Yankees in May of 1995.

Although the match ended with the Seattle Mariners winning, it still marked the beginning of Jeter’s would-be decorated career, considered to be among the most notable in the sport’s history.

The sale, which was facilitated by Goldin Auctions, reportedly set the record for being the highest price someone has paid for a modern-era jersey.

Rise to Fame

His success didn’t come quick though. Looking back, his debut year wasn’t as memorable as the year that followed it. Winning the American League Rookie of the Year award, the baseball player finally became a household name. The year 1996 proved to be prolific for him as he also led the Yankees to the World Series at the time.

In the years that follow, Jeter would go on to bag five World Series championships for his team. He also has five Gold Glove Awards under his belt. Just recently, he was voted into the sport’s Hall of Fame.

Continuing the Legacy

The former athlete has also ventured into other sports-related businesses

After retiring in 2014, the 45-year-old baseball icon has turned his sights on working behind the scenes of the game. He is now the CEO and part owner of the Miami Marlins.

This move is seen by sports commentators as an attempt to usher in a new era for a ‘longtime losing’ team the same way he did for the Yankees during his two decades playing for the team.

Aside from his stake in the Miami Marlins, Jeter has also invested his time and resources in ‘The Players’ Tribune’, an online platform with content written by professional athletes. The website covers more than just baseball with sections dedicated for football, basketball, and soccer among others.
